On the “Marrakech Express”

Graham Nash (Crosby, Stills & Nash) was on a train from Casablanca to Marrakech in 1966 and found the inspiration for this 1969 song. He was traveling in first class and was bored so he walked to the other sections and was charmed with the sights and sounds of the local riders.

On our drive, we passed through the beautiful port city of Essaouira to spend two days getting treated at the Hammam/spa (experiencing the full head and body treatment) and strolling the oceanside, Medina and souks.

Marrakech is the last city we visited. With 3 million residents and probably three times more tourists it is crowded! It’s called the “red city” since so many buildings are that color of clay. No building can be higher than the Koutoubia Mosque minaret which is four stories tall.

The Square, Medina and souks are famous—the crowds can attest to that.

I guess I was spoiled while traveling throughout the rest of Marocco so the hustle and bustle of Marrakech surprised me.

This was a great trip and provided an incredible way to experience an amazing county. I was not a fan of the foods but my taste buds are “off”. The price was right.

I’m traveling back to the USA in the morning. The trip will take about 20 hours for flights and stops so I will have plenty of time for reflection.

Thank you Marocco!
