Curious About Casablanca

As long as I can remember the city of Casablanca has been romanticized in my mind because of the movie. It was to my disappointment that I discovered that there never was a “Rick’s Cafe”. The movie was made in 1942 on a Warner Brothers soundstage in Hollywood.

In 2004, Kathy Kriger—a former counselor at the US Embassy—decided to transform celluloid fantasy into reality.

Rick’s Cafe was reborn in a 1930 grand mansion.

The city of Casablanca is a busy port on the Atlantic Ocean.

The main tourist attraction is theHassan II Mosque built in 1993. It is the second largest mosque in Africa and one of the largest in the world. It’s minaret is 60 stories high—also second tallest in the world.

Worshippers can pray over the Atlantic Ocean.

This city is not very pretty or clean. There are multi-lane roadways and an impressive tunnel that bypasses busy surface streets.

You have to search for the Art Deco architecture and “green spaces” but olive trees and Birds of Paradise grow in planters on the sidewalks.

This is a good place to start the Moroccan adventure and the mint tea is pretty tasty.
