Onward to Chefchaouen with a stop in Tangier

Tangier is a “melting pot” with it’s location at the northern most point of Morocco. The cultures, cuisine and languages come from North Africa, Spain, Portugal, and France. The ferry travels several time a day from Spain.

It is possible to see Spain with panoramic views of Gibraltar.

We finished up the day by traveling to Chefchauouen (the Blue City). This remarkable small metropolis is painted in multiple shades of blue. It is pretty much built on the side of two hills.

There is a Medina (ancient walled city) that seems to be all hills and steps. Within the Medina is the “souk”. This is a bazaar of multiple shops selling clothes, spices and all things Moroccan.

If you have a desire for a hike there is the Spanish Mosque on a hill outside of the city.

So far my impression of Morocco is mixed. It reminds me of Europe and when I turn around it seems that I’m stepping back in time and I’m in an underdeveloped country. The food is also hard to define….olives on the breakfast buffet next to chocolate cake. Pizza and pasta are plentiful in local restaurants and on the street next to our hotel were Chinese restaurants.

A very popular drink is sweet mint tea that is served after meals in little glasses.

Espresso and cappuccino are the norm during the day.

  1. HI Barb!

The weather looks to be fantastic!

I am intrigued with your mentions of the food. I would have expected tangines, couscous, flaky chicken pies, lamb stews, lentil soups, and lots of eggplant! Oh – and flatbreads.

I love your photos, and am so happy that you share these trips – I get a vicarious thrill.

    Thanks & XO,
    Donna
