DMZ

The DMZ Opened

We had to travel only about 1 1/2 hours to get to the DMZ area. Once we arrived we needed to take a “government” bus to enter the Zone. We drove to the Observation Building (as a precaution we didn’t have access to the outside deck but could see a few miles into to North Korea.

South Korea War Memorial

We visited a tunnel (NK had dug 4 tunnels to attempt to gain access to SK). We also had ample time to shop in the gift shop. Capitalism is doing well in SK.

Oeam Folk Village

Our second day traveling out of Seoul we visited a historic community. There are 56 homesteads and about 160 citizens. We visited with one women whose family went back 14 generations. The Village has only had internet and a natural gas in the municipality since the beginning of this year.

Traditional Home
Making Gochujang (Chilli Paste)

It was fun to have some “hands on” activities. We put out finished paste in the little red jar. It will need to “ferment” for 100 days. We also made Lotus wine….this only has to ferment for 15 days and is consumed at celebrations. It had an “interesting” taste…..not one I want to acquire.

Chili paste used to be stored in large jars—now it has it’s own refrigerator.

Lunch buffet at a cafe in the Village was an array of tasty vegetables, pancakes and rice.

We made a stop on way way at a Truck Stop. The restrooms were amazing and food choices were numerous.

Parts of Seoul really come alive at night….on our walk to “chicken street” to have a dinner of the famous sweet and savory poultry we enjoy a view into the street life. Many food choices are available and shopping at stalls is always busy.

I only got a sampling of the Seoul experience on my short visit. I enjoyed the multicultural history, the food and the vibrancy.

This city has made entry on my “Favorite Cities” list. I would love to come and spend more time exploring.

We are off to Japan….looking forward to some authentic sushi!
