I don’t usually write a whole blog about one place but Melbourne (pronounced by those in the know “Melbin”) has found a soft spot in my heart and moved into my list of top five favorite places in the world.
The facts: general population in the greater area is 5 million, central business district is small – a grid that is 1 mile by 1/2 mile filled with yummy food spots. Within the CBD are one thousand coffee shops – what’s not to love!
As a visitor there is no reason to leave the CBD. Walking about it feels like the streets of NYC. The sidewalks are granite and there are little laneways everywhere filled with cafes and shops and local artwork.

The trams and trolleys are all free in the CBD. The little old trolley runs around the perimeter and provides a commentaryof the sights and stops.
I was able to spend three days in Melbourne and experience some cultural events. I (and all the kids) attended Charlie and The Chocolate Factory at Her Majesty’s Theatre located in the Chinatown area.

I was able to attend a show at the Opera House (with all the seniors).

Melbourne has lots of museums. The Australian one had two photography exhibits that were out standing. When I walked into the international it felt like I was back in “the burg” with Andy looking over me.
Melbourne is a foodie paradise. Restaurants, cafes, dumpling shops, tea rooms and coffee shops are everywhere throughout the CBD.

One dinner started with a lovely Aperol spritz and then tasty spaghetti carbonara.
I attended Anglican Mass at St Paul’s Cathedral. There are two shades of stone because the spires were added thirty years after the base was built in 1891.
I spent a good part of each day walking about and enjoying the sights.

The dollar is strong and that means I get about a 32% discount.
If I would ever get tired of the CBD I could drive about a half hour north to the sea shore and spend the day at my beach shed. That is if I could afford the- 250 K / unit price tag.
Goodbye Melbourne–❤️❤️❤️❤️–I have to leave you and start up the Great Ocean Drive.
Melbourne—I’m Lovin It!
